Top 5 Gary Roberts Pompey Moments

Seemingly surplus to requirements and being pushed towards the Pompey exit, Jack Gallop looks back on his personal top five moments from Gary Roberts’ last two seasons at Portsmouth.

Despite stating he is “not going anywhere”, it looks like Roberts will not feature for us again whilst Kenny Jackett remains in charge.

Brace against Morecambe in the league

This was the Fratton faithful’s first glimpse of Roberts’ wand of a left foot, he inspired a comeback from three goals down and began by dispatching his free-kick like we see him practising so often in front of the Fratton End before games. Gently curling the ball into the top corner for the first, before beating two players and firing across the keeper for the second. He began to look like the attacking talisman we had needed.

Goal against Bournemouth in the FA Cup

Seated in the North Stand I had the perfect view of this beautiful goal as well as being right in the middle of his celebration, scoring the opener against the Premier League opposition at the time was a great moment. Let alone notching together 48 passes in the build-up before Roberts fired into the corner. We may have lost the game but after watching some of our teams in previous seasons, it was refreshing to see a ball playing squad with players of Gary’s ability headlining it.

Penalty in the play-offs against Plymouth

Roberts held his nerve from the spot in such a high pressure game in front of the away end to put away his penalty with power. This was the typical trademark penalty we were so used to seeing before our team suddenly decided that they didn’t fancy scoring penalties unless Gareth Evans was taking. Nevertheless Roberts always has been lethal from the spot and has won us numerous points solely with his spot kicks.

Goal against Barnet in the league

One of our best goals from last season as Roberts tied the centre back in knots before scoring with the outside of his left boot into the top corner, similar to his late goal against Carlisle away. This showcased that on his day he can be different class, when he plays well the entire team usually follows suit. Even though I have never seen him use his right foot, when his left is that cultured then we cannot complain.

Goal against Plymouth in the league

This tap in could well be our most important goal of the season, 1-0 down to our title rivals he used his experience and quick thinking to read the keepers error and hammer home the equaliser. Roberts loves scoring against Plymouth and in hindsight this goal essentially took the title from them.
