Points Ahead, But How Many?

Pompey sit in 5th position on 48 points after 29 played in League 2 as things stand, but how many will be required to bring success come May? With 51 points up for grabs, we take a look at how many it may take to nick the last automatic promotion place of 3rd, or the minimum of 7th place to secure a play off position.

The last 6 season points totals for the side finishing 7th in League 2 are:

72 – 09/10 Dagenham & Redbridge
68 – 10/11 Torquay
72 – 11/12 Crewe
68 – 12/13 Bradford
71 – 13/14 York
71 – 14/15 Plymouth

Using the 72 point mark as a basis of comparison, Pompey would need another 24 points to make the play-offs. With 17 matches left to play, you would expect this at the very least.

For the side finishing 3rd in League 2, the points totals are:

82 – 09/10 Rochdale
80 – 10/11 Wycombe
84 – 11/12 Crawley
78 – 12/13 Port Vale
81 – 13/14 Rochdale
85 – 14/15 Bury

Using the highest points total of 85 as a basis of comparison, Pompey would need 37 points to secure automatic promotion.

Certainly mathematically possible, although little room for slip-ups or too many draws. The Blues’ would need something like 11 wins, 4 draws with room for just 2 defeats.

Plenty of twists and turns can be expected in the League 2 promotion race as the 15/16  season ultimately comes to a conclusion with the play-off final at Wembley on May 30th.

Let us know what you think of the points required to bring Pompey success come May – whether automatic promotion or via  the play-off lottery.
