Pompey Hit Six!

Pompey hit six away from home for the first time since October 1963 as Cambridge Utd were thumped by a rampant Blues’ side.

The victory was spearheaded by a hat-trick from Matt Tubbs, a sparkling Jed Wallace performance which included the opening goal on 2 minutes and involvement in five of the goals. Paul Robinson and Ryan Taylor also chipped in with a goal apiece to double the season away goals tally from six to twelve.

Andy Awford was thrilled and speaking to the club website said “We’re really pleased with the three points and a solid, professional performance.”

“We’ve set our stall out to be difficult to beat in recent weeks, but this time we were able to add some attacking flair to that. Getting the early goal set the tone of the game and then we recovered really well from Cambridge’s equaliser. It was a poor one to give away, but when your attack-minded players are performing like they did then it’s not as important.”

“I’ve praised the forwards when we’ve kept clean sheets, so now I have to praise the whole team for the way we went forward. We looked a threat every time we got inside their half and took our goals really well. Matt’s had plenty of opportunities in the last few games and now he’s taking them and showing what a good finisher he is. I’m sure he would have liked to have scored a few more recently, but he was fantastic against Cambridge and deserves his matchball.”

Pompey are now in 14th position, 12 points from the last play-off place in 7th, with a match in hand which is played on Tuesday 24th at home to Tranmere. Another home match on Saturday 28th follows against Oxford Utd.
