Academy Home Again

Pompey Academy return to Furze Lane on Saturday (11.30am KO) where they host Exeter City in the EFL Youth Alliance SW.

Last weekend, the Blues’ maintained their unbeaten start to the season by coming from behind to beat Yeovil 2-1 at Furze Lane.

Yeovil took the lead from the penalty spot, but Eddie Wakley made amends for conceding it before the break with a header from a cross by Tommy Scutt.

Theo Widdrington then nodded in the winner from close range in the second half to take his tally to four goals in three games.

Academy coach Mikey Harris told the club website: “We started the game really well, dominating possession and creating plenty of chances.

It seemed like it would only be a matter of time before we went ahead, but as so often happens in these situations, Yeovil caught us napping on the counter-attack.

They got down the side, their striker showed a good bit of skill to come inside and Eddie just left his leg hanging to trip him. It was a definite penalty that was slammed into the bottom corner.

Eddie atoned for his mistake with a good header after Tommy had hung a cross up at the back post and we went in level at half-time.

The lads were a bit disappointed not to be ahead, but we told them that there were still another 45 minutes.

It was more open in the second half, however, and Nick Hall made some key saves, while we also had plenty of chances at the other end.

Harvey Bradbury had a couple of headed opportunities, one hitting the post and the other going narrowly wide.

Sam Woodward was also very unlucky with a well-hit volley that was superbly saved by the Yeovil keeper.

But Theo kept his great scoring run going. He was playing centre-back at the time and came up for a long throw which ricocheted off the woodwork and sat up nicely for him.

It’s probably the easiest goal he’ll ever get, but he’s taking great delight in telling everyone that he’s currently our top scorer!

Nick then made another fine save to ensure that we took the three points and I thought it was a result we deserved.

We just need to make sure that we convert more of our chances when they present themselves and that’s something we’ll be working on.”
