Academy Draw Season Opener

Pompey Academy opened their EFL Youth Alliance South West 2016/17 campaign with a 2-2 draw against Newport County at a hot Furze Lane.

They led at half-time 1-0 through a Harvey Bradbury finish after Theo Widdrington’s shot fell into his path.

The visitors levelled on the hour mark, before Bradbury’s header restored the lead from Widdrington’s free-kick.  However, the win was to prove elusive as the visitors took a share of the spoils after Pompey were unable to clear their lines from a corner.

Speaking to the club website, Academy manager Mark Kelly said:

“It was a mixed performance overall, but useful from an educational point of view as it shows how the game can change when the away team have nothing to lose. We needed to be more disciplined and structured to see things out.

The lads were disappointed in the dressing room. It was a big learning curve for them and something to work on in training during the week.”

The Academy are next in action on Saturday 13th August at home to Plymouth Argyle.
