Pompey Thru To Round Two

A brace from Adam McGurk saw Pompey through to the FA Cup Round Two as they defeated Macclesfield Town 2-1 at Fratton Park.

Pompey started well and an early goal from McGurk gave the Blues’ fans an early lift. Gradually Macclesfield settled though but without showing any real sign of getting back into the match until a harmless looking Enda Stevens throw back to Brian Murphy resulted in his clearance richotting into the net off Kristian Dennis to gift the visitors an equaliser.

Another from McGurk put Pompey back in front just before half-time following a scramble in front of the Fratton End.

Last years FA Cup attendance of 11,095 against Aldershot Town was swelled by a healthy away contingent, so maybe the attendance of 9,834 for non-league opposition was not such a surprise despite the discounted pricing by the club and improved league placing so far this season.

To be fair to Macclesfield Town supporters – all 411 of them who made the long journey south, their team did them proud and kept working hard right til the end.

The second-half came and went. The introduction of Marc McNulty to make his loan debut who looked lively and some ‘keepy-ups’ from Paul Cook the only real highlights.

Ultimately, football is about winning and with the full-time whistle Pompey could be happy with their first FA Cup win since the semi-final win against Spurs in April 2010.

Onto the second round – Pompey are ball number 21 in the draw which is live on BBC2 at 7pm on Monday evening.  Another win and Pompey would be looking at their first Round Three appearance since 2012, and just maybe a glamour tie at home to get a capacity filled Fratton Park really rocking.
