Matt Tubbs struck his fifth goal of the season at Newport to earn Pompey their fifth away win of the season.
Speaking with the club website, Paul Cook said:
“Our goal was a little bit of quality in a game that was lacking it and the lads are a bit disappointed with how we’ve played.
We were a bit too negative with our passing and need to be more positive, so that’s something to work on.
We just looked a bit lacklustre, but our fantastic support will still have gone home happy.”
The winning goal came in first-half injury time which had been added on for an injury to the referee who had to be replaced by the fourth official.
This led to a half-time PA announcement from the home club enquirying whether there was a qualified referee in the crowd to help for the second-half. Pompey fan, Mike Hurdle stepped out of he away end to become the fourth official for the remainder of the match.
