Ask any fan their first match, most memorable goal, their favourite player – past or present, or any Pompey history related question or topic and invariably you’ll open up a treasure chest of talk, photos, video or other such memorabilia pulled out from the loft or online vaults.

Whilst the talk of fans will be very much focussed on the now – whether it’s who will be the next Paul Cook signing or looking forward to the fixture release on June 17th, scroll through social media and forums you will undoubtedly find Pompey History being shared and reminisced of good or maybe even bad days gone by.

Back in April, Pompey staged their first History Day in the Victory Lounge at Fratton Park. An exhibition of club memorabilia, drawn from the Blues’ own archives, as well as loans from fans was on display and featured match-worn shirts from the noughties, including Milan Baros’ 2008 FA Cup final shirt, and a unique collection of framed cigarette and collector cards spanning more than 100 years of the club’s existence.

A programme and memorabilia fair, with dealers from across the country, Pompey Former Players Association and the Pompey Pals charity were all represented on the day.

In addition, the club are working with a company called Collective Narrative on a project called PompeyVoices which will launch this summer. This will become an online collection of fan memories, photos, video and memorabilia, as well as an official timeline of the club’s history.

The tours of the stadium, including the dressing rooms, tunnel area and boardroom of the iconic venue proved to be a popular part of the event and it was great to hear positive feedback from fans on the day.

Another History day is planned for the autumn and the club are aiming for these events to become a regular feature in the future as the healthy numbers in attendance reinforced that Pompey fans just love Pompey History.
