Portsmouth FC have confirmed that first team manager, Andy Awford, has stepped down by mutual consent. Gary Waddock is set to replace the former youth coach on an interim-caretaker manager basis.

A club statement read, “Portsmouth Football Club announce that Andy Awford has left his role as first team manager by mutual consent.

“After a meeting on Monday morning with chairman Iain McInnes and chief executive Mark Catlin, the decision was taken for him to step down with immediate effect.

“The club would like to place on record their sincere thanks for Andy’s efforts – his service to Pompey is immeasurable.”

Awford took charge at Fratton Park in March 2014, before steering the club away from relegation from the Football League.

Following the meeting, it was suggested that after a ‘natural break’, Awford would once again meet with the Club’s Board of Directors to discuss a possible role back at the football club.

The 42 year old has served almost in every role including as a player, academy coach, chief scout, caretaker manager and most recently and until today (13th April), first team manager.
