Hayden Matthews latest Aussie talent to join Pompey’s fight for Championship survival

Since the start of Portsmouth’s title winning 2023/24 season, manager John Mousinho and sporting director Richard Hughes have made a habit of searching for talent down under. With Hayden Matthews now moving to the South Coast, Pompey have now made six Australian signings and loans since July 2023.

Last season’s fan favourite, Kusini Yengi made an early impact following his arrival in July 2023. Yengi found the back of the net on his debut at home to Bristol Rovers, with his 92nd minute equalizer salvaging a point against the Gas.

Kusini Yengi went on to score nine goals over the course of the season in 26 appearances, most notably against promotion rivals Bolton Wanderers. When the Trotters came to Fratton Park in December 2023, they were 2nd in the league, three points behind Pompey. Kusini Yengi’s late goal sealed the victory which sent the Blues six points clear.

The loan signing of Alex Robertson had a massive impact on Pompey’s season in League One. The midfielder became a regular despite being just 20 years old. The Australian Under 21 international made 24 appearances before his season ending injury. Despite being absent for the remainder of the season, Pompey fans were quick to show their appreciation for the youngster, with chants of “sign him up” when he made his return to lift the League One trophy.

As one Australian loan ended, another one began. Sammy Silvera became the first Australian to join during the summer as Pompey prepared for their return to the Championship. However, the Boro winger was an underwhelming signing for the Blues, failing to score or make an assist in his 11 appearances.

His unsuccessful loan spell was mutually terminated after his woeful performance away at Bristol City. The travelling supporters expressed their disappointment during the game with cries of “send him back” and “take him off” being heard from the away end. Mousinho stated after his return, it was the “best thing for Sammy to go back”, and a quick deal was agreed with his parent club to drop down to League One with Blackpool.

Jacob Farrell was the next Aussie through the door. The left-back joined Pompey for the start of the 2024/25 campaign amid the departure of Jack Sparkes.

The 22-year-old has had a season riddled with injuries and hasn’t had a chance to become a regular face in the matchday squad. He has made just one appearance this season in a goalless draw at home to Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United.

Many fans were impressed with his 90 minute shift, and debut clean sheet against one of the best attacking sides in the league. Despite a positive debut, Farrell picked up a serious injury in training, ruling him out for the season.

Thomas Waddingham and Hayden Matthews were the latest Australian additions in January to the Portsmouth squad joining from Brisbane Roar and Sydney respectively.

This means half of all Australians in the Championship play or have played for Pompey in the last year.

With Pompey Plus becoming established and available internationally this season, the Blues may look to capitalise on marketing overseas. A strong relationship with Soceroos’ players appears to have already created an appeal for those looking to move from the land down under.

There’s real potential with this trend to grow the club and create an international fanbase. Pompey must maintain good relations with Australian teams in order to capitalise on the potential.

Perhaps a pre-season tour in Australia with friendlies against our Aussie’s former clubs could soon be on the cards for Mousinho’s side.
