Pompey’s 2024/25 season is up and running in the Championship as they battled to a point on the road at Elland Road this afternoon.
Title favourites Leeds United opened in predictable fast fashion, hitting the woodwork three times before taking the lead from the penalty spot.
At that stage Blues fans were expecting a further onslaught, however the visitors steadied themselves and hit back through a beauty of a Marlon Pack pass to debutant Elias Sorensen who finished to the delight of the travelling fans.
Unbelievably Pompey went ahead in the 41st minute with a superb strike from Callum Lang to stun the home crowd.
The Whites levelled just into the second half and further chances came and went for the host, before Pompey were awarded a penalty for a foul on Christian Saydee with 5 minutes or so remaining,
Up stepped Callum Lang to calmly slot into the back of the net to send the away fans wild.
Unfortunately it wasn’t over though. Leeds hit back to grab their third and even had a great opportunity to nick it right at the end.
Pompey battled and deserved their point, an entertaining match in front of 36,432 including 2,852 away fans.
The Blues were so close to taking all 3 points, but fans would have taken a point pre-match at a tough venue. A few more new signings to boost the squad and you would expect Pompey to be have enough to be competitive and build further in the Championship. Let’s see where the transfer window and season takes us.
John Mousinho post-match said: “Brilliant point, particularly where we were this time last week after a really poor week of football.
“The lads gave everything, Leeds know they’ve been in a game and we are gutted not to win the game. On balance it was a really good point.”
The Pompey gaffer confirmed that Yengi who missed today’s match with a groin strain may still not be fit for Tuesday against Millwall, but the club are going to try to get him back for Saturday when Luton Town visit PO4.
